      Homework:   Define Literary Terms worksheet (handed out in class)

                             Before writing the essay, read these reminders

                              Prepare one of these essays (due 9/23) from Catcher in the Rye - see here for topics 

                              Finish "Oedipus Rex" and be prepared for next week's discussion

      Homework:  Have completed "Oedipus Rex"  and be prepared for the class discussion.             

 

                               Define and write two sentences for each of these vocabulary words.

 

                              Essay:  Complete an outline &  7-paragraph essay exploring the topic of curfews.                                                                      Take a position for or against the government using this policy to control its                                                                 populace.  Be sure to research both sides of this issue before creating an                                                                        outline, and cite any/all relevant information.

Class 5 (10/7)

 

     Materials:  Binder, pens, paper, highlighters

 

     Homework:  Continue reading Ethan Frome

 

                             Pick one of the following aspects of Greek theater and write an expository essay about it/them.                              Choose from among: music, costumes or set design.  The essay should be 7 paragraphs and                                     must include all dress ups discussed hitherto.  Some additional information is here.  

 

                             Read "The Enormous Radio" by John Cheever here.  Be prepared to discuss in class.  

 

                             No quiz next week!  

 

Class 6 (10/21)

Class 7 (10/28)

     Homework:  Finish reading Ethan Frome

 

                             Read "Lamb to the Slaughter" by Roald Dahl 

 

                             Write a 7 paragraph narrative essay describing a decision, in hindsight, you wish you had                                              made.  Don't forget to include all dress-ups, and make use of the "S.E.E" structure                                                      discussed in the last class.

For "Barn Burning" write a reaction paper (not necessarily an essay - just a paragraph of about 15 - 20 sentences in which you note your feelings and opinions about the characters, plot, setting, etc.).  

 

Class 12 (12/16)  LAST CLASS 

 

Finish reading  To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

 

Study for a final exam:  Review all notes related to the works.  Be able to identify major themes, characters, conflicts and/or symbols in the works.  No need to review old vocabulary tests.  Also, review all notes related to essay construction (especially theses creation, etc.).

Class 1 (9/10)

 

Just bring your binder, and let's start learning!  

 

 

Class 2 (9/17) 

 

Please read "Beauty and the Beast", and circle the key words in "Pillbugs".

Also, don't forget to review your poems and your new Greek root, "photo" everyday!  

 

If you are able, write up the key words as we did on the board -- 3 per sentence.  

 

Class 3 (9/24)

 

Outline "Desert Tarantulas" the same way we learned in class (circling the 3 key words and re-writing in outline form). 

 

Read "The Elves and the Shoemaker" here and here

 

Start reading The Wizard of Oz (free here in a few different options.  Please complete through chapter 3.   

 

Don't forget to review all your poetry and Greek-root words!  

 

 

Class 4 (10/1)

 

Outline and write up "Oysters", and, if you have time, do the same with "Deer Flies".  Don't forget to use your new "who/which" clause!  Look here for a reminder on how to combine two boring sentences into a more mature, interesting one.
